If you’re egg free and dairy free, and looking for great breakfast ideas, this is the article for you. Today I’ll be sharing both recipes and ideas that you can lean into to make amazing egg and dairy free breakfasts at home that will leave you fueled and feeling satisfied. Managing food allergies doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a delicious healthy breakfast. Often times, people hyper-fixate on the fact that they can’t have eggs, and aren’t sure what to have for breakfast, and it ends up feeling like one of the hardest meals to conquer. The great news is, I’m going to be sharing recipes and ideas that are free from eggs and all dairy products. My goal is to have you feeling excited to tackle breakfast by the end of this article 🙂

Great Ingredients to Keep on Hand

Before you can make a delicious breakfast, you’ll want to meal plan and grocery shop. Here are some items I think are great to always have on hand. Whilst it’s not an exhaustive list of what to fill your pantry with, it’s a great starting place.

    • Non-Dairy Milk of Choice such as Coconut Milk or Almond Milk (you can also make milk at home)
    • Chia Seeds (great for making chia pudding)
    • Egg Substitutes such as JUST (if that’s your jam, not everyone is comfortable with the ingredients)
    • Dairy Free Yogurt
    • Fresh Berries (keep some of your favorite fruits on hand so you can easily add them to your breakfast)
    • Seasonings (garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, etc.)
    • Frozen Fruit (keep a range of different fruits on hand for smoothies etc.)
    • Canned Beans (black beans, navy beans, and cannellini beans are my top go-tos)
    • Liquid Sweeteners (honey, date syrup, and pure maple syrup are my top three choices)

Fun and Easy Egg and Dairy Free Breakfast Ideas

    Fresh Fruit + Overnight Oats

I’ve made this with purity protocol gluten-free oats and my oatmeal loving kid really enjoyed it. If you’re not a fan of cold breakfast cereals, still make overnight oats. Then, in the morning, heat them on the stovetop. This greatly reduces the cooking time, and I think you’ll be happy with the final results.

    Shredded Potato Breakfast Skillet

Think of this as a loaded hash brown. Start by peeling and shredding your sweet potatoes (like you would with regular potatoes). Heat a pan on medium heat and add a cooking fat (dairy free butter, olive oil, coconut oil, etc.). Season the shreds and mix in anything else you’d like, such as diced onion or mushroom. Form patties and place them in the hot cooking oil.

You can also use an ice cream scoop to move your shreds from the bowl to the pan. Cook until golden brown on one side, flip, and continue to cook until they’re done. You can top these with all sorts of things including dairy free sour cream or pure maple syrup.

Peanut Butter Breakfast Cookies + Roasted Veg

Your breakfast cookies can be a no-bake cookie, or something that you bake in advance. The upside to the latter is that most free-from cookies are freezer friendly. You could make up a couple of batches in advance and have easy breakfasts always ready to go. The flavour of your cookie can be anything. When I make them, I include ingredients such as protein powder, dried fruits, gluten free purity protocol rolled oats, and chocolate chips. You can shake things up by using a creamy peanut butter and then a crunchy peanut butter the next time.

For those who are peanut free, you can make breakfast cookies with nut butters, seed butters, legume butters, and even tiger nut butter (tuber, not a tree nut).

    Dairy Free Breakfast Sundaes

These are insanely fun to make, especially if you’re feeding young children and/or those with a sweet tooth. It starts with a super thick smoothie, so you’ll need a powerful blender to pull this off. Use an ice cream scoop to portion the smoothie into a bowl. Then, create a toppings bar. I like to include toppings such as granola/gluten-free granola, freeze dried fruit (great texture), mini chocolate chips, and cane sugar free homemade gummy bears. This screams “I am not a breakfast food” but really, we’re serving a fun smoothie. It’s a real winner if you ask me.

Easy Breakfast Ideas that are Egg Free and Dairy Free

    Egg Free Tofu Scramble

This is a great egg-free option on mornings when you have a little time to make something a bit more involved. You’ll treat this like a normal egg scramble and add additional ingredients such as fresh herbs, diced red peppers, and sliced onion. This pairs well with warm tortillas or oven roasted seasoned potatoes. The most popular brand of liquid egg substitute is JUST. Make sure you read the ingredients as there are major allergens in this product. Additionally, it may not be safe for those with Celiac Disease.

Sweet Potatoes + Sausage Breakfast Sheet Pan

This is a really easy way to make a meal on a busy morning. Preheat your oven whilst you prep your tray. To it, add peeled & cubed sweet potatoes, breakfast sausage, and any other vegetable you’d like. My kids always enjoyed a side of broccoli or green beans. Pop the tray into the oven (I usually bake at 400f/205c), then get ready for your day. It’s ready when your potatoes are easy to pierce with a fork. You can also make this with gold or red potatoes. For those who follow a plant-based diet, if you have a vegan sausage you enjoy, use that in place of traditional breakfast sausage.

    Homemade Vegan Pop Tarts

Pop tarts are pretty easy to make at home, and you can even use a simple pie crust (purchased or homemade) as the base. I used to make these for my kids, on of whom can’t have cane sugar. For that kiddo, I used Crofter’s sugar free jam and it worked like a charm. The upside to making these at home is that you have full control over the ingredients. Finding GOOD free-from pop tarts isn’t always easy. You can also make up large batches and freeze the leftovers.

Egg-Free Dairy-Free Breakfast Ideas for Busy Mornings

If your mornings are often hectic, it’s a great idea to start by planning ahead. Having a solid meal plan can really help make your mornings easier. Second, make sure you’re using easy recipes if cooking is involved. Where you can, lean into foods such as overnight oats or chia pudding, which are made in advance when you have more down time.

    Ground Meat or Sausage Salad

This may sound a bit weird, but trust me, it works and it’s delicious. You can make up a fresh batch of ground meat, or if you have some leftover from dinner, go with that. You can add in traditional salad ingredients such as a dressing, tomatoes, and croutons. You can also go in different direction and create a warm breakfast salad.

If you’re using sausage, make sure it’s a dairy free sausage, as many traditional sausages contain milk.

    Pre-Made Frozen Foods

This may sound obvious, but when you’re living the free-from life, sometimes you forget about the basic options available to you. If you’re egg and dairy free only, there are a lot of great items you can purchase in stores that are frozen. Muffin Revolution and Hilary’s Eat Well come to mind. Convenience items like these are super handy on busy mornings.

Alternatively, you can make your own fast food. My kids loved that I always had a freezer full of options for them to choose from. I generally kept muffins, waffles, pancakes, granola/breakfast bars, and breakfast pizza all in the freezer. I’d make double or triple batches of a recipe and freeze the food. The kids would then pick what they wanted and heated it in their toaster oven whilst getting ready for the day.

Chia Pudding, Avocado Porridge, and Overnight Oats

I’ve mentioned these throughout this article because they really are life savers. These three foods can all be made in advance and you can even eat them on the go. Not only that, but you can rotate through a huge range of flavours so you never get bored.

Answering Your Egg and Dairy Free Breakfast Questions

Is it possible to make pancakes and waffles without eggs, and only using almond flour as the flour?

I’m going to say no on this one. I know what you’re trying to create, and without using really weird ingredients, it won’t work well. Almond flour is pretty special and without eggs or other helpful ingredients, it doesn’t stand alone well for recipes that need to rise. Now, you CAN make a good cookie that’s almond flour only and without eggs.

You could make yourself an incredibly delicious breakfast cookie that also freezes well and has a great crunch. Make sure you use a granulated sweetener if you choose to make these, as a liquid sweetener won’t give you what you’re looking for.

Can I add protein powder to my regular recipe for dairy-free pancakes?

Yes, you absolutely can. Then general rule of thumb is that you can remove up to 25% of the total flour and replace it with a protein powder. I tend to stick closer to the 10 – 15% numbers since I also create gluten free recipes (wheat allergy here). Gluten free flours are much more temperamental, so keep that in mind if you’re also gluten free.

You can use this rule for waffles and muffins as well. I suggest choosing protein powders that aren’t super grainy, and that don’t clash with the flavour profile you’re creating.

I’m gluten free and looking for a bread that’s also egg free. Do you know of any brands?

Some of the most popular gluten-free breads contain egg, however, three brands to check out are Ener-G, Happy Campers, and Little Northern Bakehouse. If you’re a fan of sourdough, be sure to check out Bread SRSLY and Young Kobras (they both ship nationwide).
