Tip: If you’re trying to add red to a festive meal and can’t quite make it work, get a red bowl, plate, or serving platter and call it a day.

List of Red Vegetables
Here’s a list of common red vegetables, along with a few less common red vegetables. For foods such as red kale and red lettuce, you may need to visit an organic/natural leaning grocery store. You can also find these types of red ingredients at your farmer’s market.
- Beets (you can also purchase beetroot powder to add to foods without the hassle of working with beets)
- Chilies (there are lots of red chilies including Fresno chilies, red Thai chilies, Anaheim chilies, ghost peppers, scotch bonnet, and so on)
- Kidney Beans (these are a maroon colour)
- Radishes (skin on)
- Red Bell Peppers
- Red Lentils (they have a bit of an orange tint)
- Red Lettuce

- Guava (the red variety has a pink-leaning inside flesh color)
- Jujubes (specialty Chinese fruit with a bit of a red tint)
- Lychee (outside only, the flesh is white)

- Red Grapes
- Red Mango (outside is red, flesh is yellow)
- Red Pears (with the skin still on, the flesh isn’t red)
- Red Skinned Apples

Honourable mention goes to red plums. Whilst the name indicates red, the plum is much closer purple. Also, some consider blood oranges to be red, but it really depends on who you ask. The flesh is a very dark orange, or perhaps a maroon color.
Note: There are more apples that are the color red, however, I’ve included the most common and popular apple varieties.
List of Red Spices & Seasonings
- Ancho Chili Powder

- Rose Petals (this is the organic option that I purchase, it’s a lot though, other brands may have a smaller size available)
- Ruby Chocolate
- Salsa
Note: When making a jam or jelly at home, read about acid levels, as some fruits such as pomelo won’t do well in that setting from the acid content.
Snack Ideas for Red Foods
There are so many fun and delicious red foods snacks that you can serve up on weekdays, during parties (including sports parties for your favorite team), and even as a midnight snack. Here are just a few ideas to get you started:
Dipping Platter (serve a combination of sliced red fruits and red vegetables along with a few dips you love the taste of)
Yogurt + Little Granola or Crushed Nuts + Diced Red Fruit of Choice (you can also thaw frozen red fruits such as cherries and it’s delicious)
Red Smoothie (mix protein powder, milk of choice, and frozen red fruits together for delicious red smoothies)
Red Apple “Donuts” (this article shows you how to make an apple donut from fresh cut apples, top with yogurt, a few mini chocolate chips, and either red fruit powder or small diced red fruit)
Valentine’s Day Red Food Ideas
There are a lot of great ways to bring the colour red into your Valentine’s Day dishes. I’ll share a few ideas, but I’m also going to point you to this article that solely focuses on red foods for Valentine’s Day. Bonus: serve your Valentine’s Day meal with red wine for that extra pop of color.
Red Butter as a Garnish or “Side”
To make a red butter, you’ll use the compounding butter method where you allow butter (this also works with vegan butter and dairy free butter) to soften, then you mix in spices. You can put it back in the fridge after mixing if you’d like it to firm up some before using.
When making a red compound butter, add a pinch of salt, and any variety of paprika you enjoy the taste of. Assuming you’re not allergic to cashews, you can also add a little fresh ground pink peppercorn.
This concept extends to saffron butter, as well as spicy cayenne butter. No matter which way you go, you can add a pat of butter on everything you serve, or have it in a small dish off to the side and let people serve themselves.
Apple and Beetroot Salad
Start with a bed of lettuce you enjoy such as chopped romaine. You can add a little shaved purple cabbage or Russian red kale to the lettuce mix. You can make this with pork for meat eaters, or use pulled jackfruit for vegan and vegetarian diners. Lean into ancho chili and paprika as the main spices if you’d like to continue with the red theme.
You’ll want to steam your beets, and small dice your apples with the skin on. Toss this all together with a salad dressing you enjoy, and when serving, add a little feta cheese (you can also get dairy free feta cheese these days). If there aren’t any nut allergies, crushed almonds or crushed walnuts would make an excellent addition to this salad.
Creamy Tomato Pasta
Generally speaking, people love serving creamy foods on Valentine’s Day since it feels more indulgent. You can cook up a delicious batch of creamy tomato pasta sauce and serve that over the cooked pasta you enjoy the most.
Red Ratatouille
It’s easy to forget that ratatouille can be a combination of any vegetables, served in a specific style. For example, you could combine red peppers, zucchini (courgette), and red sweet carrots, and beets into a a gorgeous ratatouille. To make it visually stunning, alternate between the white (or green if the skin is on) zucchini and the red vegetables.
Kimchi Fries
If you love a crispy fry, and you enjoy spicy foods, kimchi fries is a must try. You can keep it basic and serve your fries with a side of kimchi, or… you can get a little fancy and make a blended kimchi sauce along with a cheddar or gouda dipping sauce to go with your fries.
You can also add to this spicy ground beef for a wonderful take on chili cheese fries.
Christmas Red Food Ideas
In addition to having red and white candy canes at your Christmas party, here are some appetizer ideas and main dishes to include.
Cranberry Chicken Salad (here’s a great recipe you can follow, and the colour really pops)
Cheese + Cranberry Crackers (start with small crackers, place a little cheese cube on top, followed by a sweetened dried cranberry)
Chocolate Stuffed Strawberries (you can core out strawberries with a tool like this one, then stuff with chocolate chips or a homemade chocolate ganache)
Red Dipping Sauces (you can easily make cranberry sauce, strawberry sauce, beet sauce, and many others to bring in a lovely red hue or even a crimson hue without doing too much extra work)
Strawberry Santa Hats (place banana slices down, top each one with a small trimmed strawberry, insert a toothpick into the center all the way down, then place a mini marshmallow on the bit of toothpick sticking out)
Red Foods for a Party
If you want something simple for a party, put out a bowl of Swedish Fish or red licorice. These are two great treats to have on hand that are red, and it requires next to no work to serve them up.
Make Red Pretzel Sticks
You’ll want to purchase large/thick pretzels for this party food. You can use a red glaze or, you can use a white glaze, then dunk the pretzels in red sprinkles. They’re pretty easy to make, and I’m sure Pinterest has a bunch of cute pretzel ideas.
Create Red Popcorn
This can be really fun. First, you’ll pop your popcorn as you normally would. Then, transfer it to small bags for each person. Add a little sweet paprika, then shake like mad to coat the popcorn in a red seasoning.
You can also add cayenne pepper for anyone that likes a spicy kick. Your popcorn won’t scream “I am red, hear me roar”, but it will have a nice tint. If you’re adding cayenne, you’ll want to be careful with the amount that you add, as a little can go a long way.
You can take this a step further and serve it in a cute red bag or container.
Make a Gorgeous Red Fruit Platter
It’s common knowledge that we eat with our eyes first. One way you can take advantage of that is to craft a gorgeous red fruit platter for your party. You can use a large wooden cutting board as the “tray” or a charcuterie board if you have one.
There are lots of great websites these days that will show you how to combine clusters of fruits that form an appealing design. Depending on the event, you can also break up the red with other colours.
For example, if this is for a sports gathering, you can use team colours. If it’s for the holidays, it can be red and green for Christmas or reds and orange for Thanksgiving.
Beet Waffle Bar (or Pancake Bar)
You can make waffles pink or red by adding a beet puree. First, steam or oven roast peeled + cubed beets. Then, blend with milk of choice to create a nice beet milk (it will be pretty thick).
Use that in waffles or pancakes as the base for your waffle bar. Now, have lots of small bowls out with different toppings, and try to stick with as many red options as possible. Be sure to include strawberries, diced red apple, pomegranate seeds, and any other toppings you fancy.
Cake or Brownies with Red Vanilla Frosting or Strawberry Frosting or Raspberry Frosting
Here’s a brownie recipe you can follow that’s gluten free, dairy free, egg free, and more. Start with something like this as your base, then pipe on a red frosting of your choice. You can tint vanilla frosting, or make a strawberry frosting, cherry frosting, or raspberry frosting.
There are no wrong answers here, and honestly, you could make all four then create really neat patterns all over your brownies using different decorating tips.

Red Foods for a Color Party
If you enjoy having themed parties and happen to be having a red themed color party, here are a few ways you can include red into the foods you serve.
Create a Red Milk Shake Bar
If you’ve seen an ice cream sundae bar or a waffle bar, this is the same concept. Create a strawberry milkshake base in your blender and have that available for people to pour.
Then, have small bowls with all sorts of red toppings such as sprinkles, chopped cherries, and so on. Try to stick with the red colour as much as possible.
Make Red Drinks
You can make all sorts of delicious red drinks to serve at a party. Be sure to reach out to party guests beforehand to collect information on food allergies and food intolerances.
If you have guests that can’t have milk, find out what they can have, then choose a product that’s safe for everyone.
From there, blend up your milk of choice + chilled or partially frozen red fruits, to create a wide assortment of drinks to choose from.
You could also just serve red wine if this is an adult party.
Ref Fruit + Red Veggies Platter
Slice up a range of red fruits and red vegetables, pop them on a cute serving platter, and add a few dips for people to choose from. If you want your produce to look extra cute, use a mini cookie cutter on some pieces.
Make Mini Red Pies
You can make either hand pies or pies made in individual cups and use red fruits as your filling. You can easily find recipes online for strawberry pie and cherry pie as a starting point.
Depending on the region you live in, you can tap into a lot more delicious red fruits for your pie filling. For example, tropical areas such as Florida and Southeast Asia are teeming with red fruits year round and instead of worrying about how long they’ve been sitting during transit, you can visit your local farmer’s market.
If you’ve never made pie before, look up a basic berry pie recipe, review the method, then apply it to the fruits you’ve purchased. The water content of some fruits will make them better pie toppings rather than pie fillings. Also remember that some fruits such as red bananas are only red on the outside with a white or yellow interior, so they won’t make for the best pie filling either.
Bacon Wrapped Anything
When cooked, bacon has a red tint to it, along with some brown. You can wrap just about anything in bacon and I’m sure your guests will be happy.
If you’re having a large party, skip this idea, as the price of bacon for that many wraps can be pretty high.
Strawberry & Cherry Fondue
Grab a fondue pot, strawberries, cherries, skewers, and have fun. You can use white chocolate or a sweetened milk chocolate in your fondue pot for guests to enjoy.
If you need dairy free chocolate chips, check out this section of my Ultimate Guide to Dairy Free Substitutes.

Benefits of Eating Red Foods
I won’t keep you too long, but know that there are a lot of health benefits to eating the different varieties of red foods available. The same however is true of all produce, even white produce. Each of the different colors produces a range of flavors, textures, and health benefits.
In the red arena, lycopene and antioxidants are the top two nutrients you’ll hear about. You’ll also find that red foods such as bell peppers are rich in Vitamin C (along with many other vitamins). Incorporating red foods into your diet, along with other fruit and veg has been shown to reduce inflammation, and aide in a whole host of other medical conditions.
Produce, as a general rule, will be an excellent source of vitamins, minerals, potassium, and much more. If you’re looking to incorporate more produce to help with weight loss, be sure to lean into red vegetables as they’ll contain less calories when compared with red fruits.
Remember when people used to say you are what you eat? We need to bring that back because you really are what you eat. If you fill your plate with a range of colors alongside clean protein, you’re going to be humming along nicely.
You can read this article from the National Institute of Health to learn more about the human health benefits of incorporating red foods into your regular meals. It includes a great overview of vitamin and mineral content of different red foods as well.
Answering Your Questions About Red Foods
Is it possible to make red water without red food dye?
Yes! You can absolutely make red drinks without red food dye or other artificial food coloring. You will need a blender for it to look good though. Here’s my immediate thoughts for you:
- Water + Freeze Dried Strawberry Powder
- Water + Freeze Dried Raspberry Powder (you may want a few drops of sweetener to boost this one)
- Water + Freeze Dried Red Currant Powder (this is the one that I purchase, needs a sweetener for sure)
- Water + Pomegranate Juice
- Water + Strawberry Juice
If you don’t mind having fruit chunks in your drink, you could blend in grape, strawberry, or raspberry with your water. I’d avoid cranberry, unless you plan to use a sweetener. If you’re OK with natural dyes, this is the chemical free food dye that I personally use. You could add a few drops to water if you don’t want the fruit flavor.
What types of red desserts are low in sugar?
The best types of desserts to make that will be low in sugar will be fruit + whipped cream + drizzled sauce. Once you get into baking, sugar is a critical ingredient, and you may not be able to find a truck tonne of dessert recipes online that meet your criteria.
However, you can put together a delicious parfait of red fruit + homemade granola + whipped cream. You can also purchase a Paleo granola, as these tend to be much lower in added sugar.
Another option is to create a refined sugar free fruit compote (something like strawberry balsamic basil is an excellent choice), and serve that on top of a homemade low sugar cake that you bake from scratch. For texture and crunch, you could sprinkle on homemade candied nuts (break them up a bit first).
You can also make a sweet leaning cheese plate and serve it as an alternative to dessert. There are so many types of wheat based and gluten free crackers you can start with. Then, choose ripe, naturally ripe fruits that pair well with cheese such as strawberries, red grapes, cranberries, cherries, and red pear. Some of these pairings would also benefit from a tiny drizzle of dark chocolate (yes, it pairs well with cheese) and a tiny pinch of salt to draw out natural flavors.
Is there a way to make hard boiled eggs red?
Since one of my kids can’t have eggs, I don’t have a lot of working experience with them. If this were me, I’d make a hibiscus water, and soak boiled eggs in that (cold). Hopefully, the white of the boiled egg will take on the colour nicely.
Are there any naturally red seeds?
Pomegranate seeds, also called pomegranate arils, are naturally red seeds that are edible. That’s the key thing to focus on when searching online: edible. There are lots of red seeds you can plant, but not too many you can eat.
Now, something you can do to get creative is to take white seeds such as white chia seeds and tint them pink with an overnight soak in red water, or with a little natural red dye.
What types of salad toppings would taste good with red fruits and vegetables?
Honestly, a lot. The key is to choose ingredients that will compliment one another. Seafood and meats pair well with both fruits and vegetables, so know that going in as well. Here are a few combos to get the ideas flowing:
- Lettuce + Shredded Chicken + Pomegranates + Citrus Fruits
- Lettuce + Ground Pork + Wild Blueberries + Steamed Beets + Fresh Cheese
- Lettuce + Small Diced Mangoes + Tomato + Caramelized Red Onions + Fresh Cheese + Croutons
- Lettuce + Salmon + Blackberries + Peaches or Nectarines
- Lettuce + Shaved or Shredded Red Carrot + Citrus Fruit + Shredded Pork + Creamy Dressing
Some of the biggest perks to serving salads in my humble opinion is that you can easily change the flavor profile, easily try a new cuisine (by using traditional ingredients as toppings), have a little sweetness with the fruit, and eat thru range of nutrients.
Hopefully these ideas get you thinking about non-traditional ways to bring in delicious salad toppings and have you exploring new opions.
How can I make red currants taste less tart?
The easiest way to reduce the tartness of currants is to pair them with something on the sweet side. This can be something like chocolate, or another fruit that has a sweeter flavor profile. Be sure to avoid pairing your red currants with other sour or tart fruits, or fruits that aren’t fully ripened.
